Cancer is the second leading cause of death in the United States following heart disease. It is characterized by the uncontrolled growth and spread of abnormal cells, which continue to reproduce until they form a mass of tissue known as a tumor. A malignant tumor can interrupt body functions and takes away food and blood supply from normal cells.
Do you know that a person can have changes in their lifestyles to reduce the risk of cancer?
Here are some ways on how to reduce your risk in having cancer:
1. Choose a diet rich in variety of plant-based foods
A diet rich in antioxidant vitamins and minerals found in cruciferous vegetables (broccoli, spinach, cabbage and Brussels sprouts), legumes, fruits, whole grains and green tea has long been associated with reduce cancer risk.
2. Eat plenty of vegetables and fruits
If vegetables and fruits are emphasized in the diet, fiber intake will increase. Fiber moves food through the gastroinstestinal tract faster. This rapid transit of food through the intestines decreases the amount of time carcinogens are in contact with the gastrointestinal mucosa.
3.Maintain a Healthy Weight and be Physically Active
Physical activity helps to prevent obesity and promote insulin sensitivity.
4. Drink Alcohol in Moderation
Alcohol in excess is a known cancer risk. This may be a result of a product of alcohol metabolism, acetaldehyde. Acetaldehyde causes DNA to become fragile through its destruction of the folate molecule and appears to promote tumor formation.
5. Select foods Low in Fact and Salt
There is a strong evidence that saturated fats is related to the increase incidence of cancer. Monounsaturated fats found in olive oil appear to have at least neutral effect on cancer. One way to decrease the intake of saturated and polyunsaturated fats is to limit the total fat intake.
High Salt intake is associated with higher cancer rates, especially gastric cancer. The impact of salt of the risk of cancer may have to do with its ability to erode the protective mucous lining of the stomach.
6. Prepare and store foods safely
Safe food handling practices include avoidance of food pathogens that occur with spoiled foods. Avoiding excess intake of foods cooked at high temperature such as barbecued meats.
7. Do not use tobacco in any form
Chewing tobacco is a known risk factor for cancer of the oral cavity. Cigarette, cigar, and pipe smoking allows carcinogens to enter systematically and is related to a variety of cancers.
These are just some of the preventive measures for cancers. Stay Healthy and Live Longer by applying the things that were mentioned above.
