‘We are not our children’s obligation’: Tricycle driver’s story to passenger pulls at the heartstrings

Published

Am I my parents’ keeper?

Most people would say that those who bring a child into existence are thereby obligated to care for that child; that it isjust proper to raise your childen and ensure that they are well taken cared of and prepared for their life ahead of them.

But should children be obliged to return the ‘favor’ to their parents? Now that is a point that has raised many discussions. “Is it the children’s obligation to financially support their parents in return for raising them? Not to mention other factors like emotional and mental support?

A post shared by Ven Rebo Arigo on Facebook credited to a certain Camille Cruz went viral with over 16k shares and more than 28K reactions. It tugged at the heartstrings of netizens because of the old man’s story to his passenger.

As per the flow of the story, the passenger was asked by the driver of the tricycle if she’s a college student which she affirmed. She was then asked what year she was in; to which she replied, “4th year na po, graduating na po.”

The passenger said that the old driver smiled but it didn’t quite reach his eyes which looked sad.

Surprisingly, the driver then told her that after she graduates and lands a good job, may she never forget to look back at her parents who did everything they could for her so she would have a good life in the future.

The passenger admitted feeling so sad over what the haggard-looking driver said. She asked him back, “Why, Manong? Where are your children?”

He said his children are done studying and that one is an engineer while the other is a doctor.

The passenger shared she was surprised and puzzled at the same time over that revelation. She thought, if his children are already successful, why is Manong still working as a PUV driver at his age? She voiced out her thoughts  to the old man.

The driver half-heartedly smiled, and the sadness, she said, was evident.

“Ngumiti ulit si manong nang may lungkot,” she shared.

Manong told her that his two children are already abroad. He still needs to drive his trike to earn a living for him and his wife as his children, he said, get mad whenever he tries to ask money from them. His children have allegedly told them that they are not their obligation; that they were not raised in this world to be their money providers.

In closing, the passenger mentioned feeling so sorry and so sad over the driver’s revelation,

Naka dama ako ng lungkot para sa kanilang mag asawa.,” she said in her post.

Meanwhile, nearly 6,000 comments have poured on the post; with many feeling sad for Manong and his wife.

God Knows.”

“Children, we need to remember our parents though you have your own family we still need to help them for without them you’ll not reach what you are now, remember them always.”

Some wondered if the children have adopted the culture of other countries. Most Filipinos are not like that with their aging parents. Even those who are  dubbed as belonging to the “sandwich generation” find it hard to let go of their ‘obligations’ to their parents out of love and reverence. This is where retirement and insurance plays a huge part in our old age.

Whether the story truly happened or not, whether it was meant to make people think of their future retirement, and life as well as medical insurance, many have attested that the situation happens in real life. Many old parents rely on their children’s love and assistance.

To those who have experienced a fate such as Manong’s, may you have the courage and strength to keep on.
